Best Things to Do in Gili Meno (2026 Guide): Beaches, Turtles, Snorkelling & More

Gili Meno is the smallest, quietest, and most “romantic” of the three Gili Islands, but that does not mean there is nothing to do. In fact, if you enjoy clear water, laid-back beach days, sea turtles, snorkelling, and slow travel, Gili Meno can easily end up being your favourite of the three.

It is not the island for parties, shopping, or a packed itinerary. It is the island for watching the sunrise, long swims, lazy bike rides, and the kind of afternoons where the biggest decision you make is whether to snorkel first or order lunch first. As I am creating an article about Gili Meno, you would obviously expect me to be positive, but I always try to be as honest about a place as possible. I am happy to say that Ao Nang in Thailand is a bad choice of town to stay in and that Playa del Carmen in Mexico is full of the most annoying tourists you could hope to meet. Gili Meno, and this may be my own personal tastes coming through, is paradise. Of course, paradise has a bit of plastic rubbish on the edge of the beach and has limited food options, but that said, I loved it here.

A lot of other blogs describe Gili Meno as somewhere you visit only to relax, but that undersells it. Yes, this island is peaceful, but there is still plenty to fill your days if you know where to look. From the famous underwater statues and turtle-filled snorkelling spots to sunset bars, seafood dinners, diving, and island-hopping, Gili Meno has more going on than people often expect. It is also the calmest of the Gilis, with no cars or motorbikes, just walking, cycling, and horse carts, which gives the whole island a slower rhythm than Gili Trawangan or even Gili Air.

Gili Meno quick take

  • Best for travellers who want quiet beaches, clear water, turtles, and a much slower pace than Gili Trawangan.
  • The standout experiences are shore snorkelling, the Nest statues, lazy beach time, cycling the island, and sunset on the west coast.
  • The island is beautiful, but it is not polished. Expect limited food options and the occasional bit of plastic rubbish.
  • If you only have one full day, prioritise snorkelling, beach time, and sunset rather than trying to overfill your itinerary.

How to get to Gili Meno

If you are planning your trip to Gili Meno, you will most likely be arriving by fast boat from Bali. This is the same boat company I took on the way back, and it is one of the easiest ways to make the crossing without overcomplicating things.

Where I stayed before the ferry

I stayed here the night before my ferry in Padang Bai, and it made the whole journey much easier. It is near the port, simple, and a good option if you have an early departure and do not want extra stress on the morning of travel.

Why Gili Meno feels different from the other Gili Islands

Before getting into the list, it helps to understand what makes Gili Meno special. Gili Trawangan is the social one. Gili Air is the balanced one. Gili Meno is the one people choose when they want quiet beaches, fewer crowds, and a much slower pace. Official Indonesian tourism material still describes it as the most idyllic and romantic of the three, with notable dive spots and a saltwater lake, while newer resort and dive operator material leans into exactly the same idea: calm beaches, strong snorkelling and diving, and a peaceful atmosphere built around the sea.

That matters because the best things to do in Gili Meno are not really about ticking off attractions at speed. They are about enjoying the island properly. Gili Meno rewards people who like swimming, snorkelling, photography, sunsets, and quiet corners more than people looking for a packed sightseeing day.

Spend proper time on Gili Meno’s beaches

The most obvious thing to do on Gili Meno is also one of the best. The beaches here are exactly why many people choose Meno over the other islands. The water is bright turquoise, the sand is pale and soft in many areas, and the atmosphere is noticeably quieter than Gili T or Gili Air.

Not every stretch of beach feels the same. Some parts of the shoreline are better for swimming than others because parts of the Gili Islands have coral rubble or harder seabeds underfoot. If you want the most enjoyable beach time, it is worth being slightly selective rather than just stopping at the first patch of sand you see. The southeast side of Gili Meno is often one of the better areas for a relaxed swim and a sandy entry, and it is one of the easiest places to have that classic white-sand, calm-water island moment people come here for.

This is the kind of beach where you do not need an agenda. Bring snorkel gear, a book, some cash for a coconut or lunch nearby, and just stay for a few hours. On Gili Meno, beach time is not filler between activities. It is one of the main activities.

Snorkel to the Nest underwater statues

If Gili Meno has one signature attraction, it is the Nest underwater statues. Installed off the coast of Gili Meno in 2017, Nest is a circular underwater sculpture by Jason deCaires Taylor made up of 48 life-size figures. It sits in shallow water at around 4 metres and was designed not just as art, but as an environmental installation to help support marine growth and reef regeneration over time.

This is one of the most photographed snorkelling spots in the Gili Islands, and yes, it is touristy. I think this is one of the activities I have some negative things to say about. I took a private boat there, however it is possible to take a cheaper tour or to swim from the beach. I am an average-level swimmer, and I feel like exploring the statue with a boat and guide is the safer option. If I could have my time again, I would have arranged the boat much, much earlier to avoid the crowds. It was busy when I experienced it, however I have seen videos of it much, much worse than what I experienced. I think the more people there are, the more dangerous it could be, as you are splashing into each other trying to get close to the statues. This was also the one time I experienced a high level of plastic rubbish in the water. In fact, my guide threw his cigarette lighter into the sea.

In conclusion, for the underwater statues, if you want to see them, go early and avoid the crowds.

Snorkel with sea turtles straight from the beach

For a lot of people, this ends up being the real highlight of Gili Meno. The island sits in a part of the Gilis well known for turtle encounters.

What makes Gili Meno especially good is that you do not always need a boat trip to see turtles. In the right spots, and with decent conditions, you can snorkel from shore and have a very realistic chance of seeing them. The west and northwest side, as well as parts of the north side, are often mentioned by travellers and operators as good turtle areas, especially where reef and seagrass meet.

That is a huge part of Gili Meno’s appeal. You can have a completely low-key day, walk into the sea with a mask and snorkel, and end up face to face with a turtle in surprisingly shallow water.

Of course, this is one of those experiences that only stays special if people behave properly. Give turtles space, never touch them, never chase them for a photo. I may be guilty of following the turtle for a while to get my photos. I honestly believe I was not bothering it too much, as when it was ready to leave, it did, and at a pace I would not have been able to catch up with.

Take a snorkelling boat trip around the Gili Islands

Even though Gili Meno is excellent for shore snorkelling, it is still worth doing at least one boat trip if you want the full underwater experience. I did both, and the boat trip gave me the chance to experience something I would not have been able to see from the shore.

Most Gili snorkelling tours combine a few of the classic sites across the islands, often including the Nest statues, turtle spots, coral gardens, and sometimes a wreck site depending on route and conditions. Tour operators advertising Gili snorkelling trips from Meno typically offer short or half-day trips that include statues, turtles, coral reefs, and wreck-related stops.

The big advantage of a boat tour is variety. Instead of repeating one reef edge from shore, you get a broader picture of what the Gili Islands offer underwater.

The trade-off is crowds. Shared tours are cheaper, but they can feel a bit conveyor-belt-like in peak season. If budget allows, a private or early-morning trip is much better. It gives you more flexibility and makes the experience feel far less rushed. If you are only on Gili Meno for two nights, this is one of the activities I would push high up the list.

Try something different: horse riding on the beach

If you want something a bit different from snorkelling and beach time, there are also a few organised activities on Gili Meno, including horse riding by the water.

Go scuba diving around Gili Meno

If you dive, Gili Meno is not just a place to tag onto a beach holiday. It is a serious underwater destination. Official Indonesia Travel material highlights Gili Meno as having notable dive spots including Meno Wall, while Blue Marlin’s site describes the Gili Islands as one of Indonesia’s top diving destinations within the Coral Triangle, with more than 20 dive sites in the wider area and many just 10 to 20 minutes away by boat.

Meno Wall is one of the best-known local sites. Blue Marlin describes it as a steeply sloping reef with a near-vertical top section, soft corals, lots of reef fish, and a good chance of turtles between sections of the wall. The same operator also highlights nearby sites like the Bounty Wreck, where turtles are commonly spotted near the entry slope, and Shark Point, where reef sharks are among the possible sightings.

That gives Gili Meno more depth than just “nice snorkelling island.” You have turtles, coral walls, macro life, wreck features, and the chance of bigger marine encounters depending on site and conditions. It is also a good place for people who want a quieter dive base. Gili Meno’s Blue Marlin centre describes itself as a more personal, relaxed experience compared with busier island operations, which fits the island’s overall vibe.

Even if you are not certified yet, this is a strong place to do a try dive or start a course if learning in warm, clear water sounds appealing.

Visit the Gili Meno Turtle Sanctuary

The turtle sanctuary is one of the few land-based attractions on the island. According to the sanctuary’s own site, its mission is to protect turtle eggs from predators, allow them to hatch naturally, and raise young turtles for around a year before release. The sanctuary says the turtles are fed every two hours from sunrise to sunset and kept in tanks with fresh salt water pumped in from the sea.

That gives a bit more context to what could otherwise look like a very simple stop. This is not a big polished conservation centre. It is much more modest than that. Recent traveller comments also reflect that reality, describing it as small and simple rather than a full-scale visitor attraction, often with donation-based entry.

So, is it worth visiting? Yes, I feel like you will naturally pass the sanctuary. The island is small, and one of the best activities out of the water is walking or cycling around the whole island.

Walk or cycle around the island

One of the nicest things to do on Gili Meno is also one of the simplest: just explore it slowly. Because there are no cars or motorbikes on the Gili Islands, everyday movement is already different here. Travel is mostly on foot, by bicycle, or by cidomo, the traditional horse cart. That absence of traffic is a huge part of why Gili Meno feels so calm.

Cycling and walking suit Gili Meno particularly well because the island is small enough that you can cover a lot without trying too hard. You do not need a strict route. In fact, it is better without one. Take the inland paths, cut back to the beach, stop at a quiet warung, and let the island reveal itself slowly.

That said, it is worth knowing that some sandy stretches can make cycling awkward, especially on parts of the western side. You might end up pushing the bike rather than riding it in places. That is normal, and honestly, it is part of the island’s charm. Gili Meno is not really about “sightseeing” in the traditional sense. It is more about those small in-between moments: passing a mosque, hearing the sea from a sandy lane, spotting a quiet beachfront café, or finding a stretch of coast that looks even better than the last one.

Watch sunset on the west coast

Sunset is a proper event on Gili Meno, even though the island is much quieter than Gili T. The west coast is the place to be in the evening, with views back toward Gili Trawangan and, on clear days, Mount Agung in Bali beyond. Travel coverage focused on Gili sunsets points specifically to the west side of Gili Meno, often called Sunset Beach, as the best area for it.

The beauty of sunset on Gili Meno is that it feels less performative than it can on Gili Trawangan. There are still beachfront bars and restaurants where you can sit with a drink, but the mood is more low-key and less about a crowd gathering for the same photo. A good Gili Meno evening does not need much. Swim late, shower off the salt, find a west-coast bar or restaurant, order something cold, and watch the light fade. On this island, that really is enough.

Explore the saltwater lake, but keep expectations realistic

The saltwater lake is one of the more unusual things about Gili Meno because you do not usually expect to find an inland saltwater lake on an island this small. Official Indonesian tourism still lists the seawater lake as one of Gili Meno’s distinctive attractions, and some travel sources describe it as a unique natural area with mangroves and birdlife around it.

However, this is one of the places where some older travel blogs can make it sound better maintained than it necessarily is today. The boardwalk can be in rough condition or partly broken, and the area is more of a quick curiosity stop than an essential scenic highlight.

So I would include it in a detailed Gili Meno itinerary, but I would not build your day around it. If you are already cycling or walking around the island and want to see something a bit different from the beaches, it is worth a look. Just frame it honestly: a short detour for curious travellers, not one of the island’s absolute must-see experiences.

Island-hop to Gili Air or Gili Trawangan

One of the best things about staying on Gili Meno is that you do not have to choose only one atmosphere for your whole trip. If you start craving more restaurants, a busier nightlife scene, or just a bit more action, both Gili Air and Gili Trawangan are close enough for an easy hop. Current booking and transfer sites indicate regular daylight public boat and ferry connections between Gili Meno, Bangsal in Lombok, and the surrounding Gili Islands, though exact timings vary and should always be rechecked locally.

That flexibility is one of Gili Meno’s biggest strengths. You can stay somewhere calm and then dip into the energy of another island for half a day if you want. Gili Air is usually the best choice if you want a bit more going on without going fully into party mode. Gili Trawangan is better if you want nightlife, more dining options, and a busier social scene. Then you can return to Gili Meno at the end of the day and enjoy the quiet again.

If you are continuing onwards and want a faster option, you can also look at a private transfer: View private speedboat options here.

Get up early for a sunrise swim or beach walk (my top pick)

Gili Meno is one of those islands that rewards early risers. Even though sunset gets more attention, sunrise on the east side has its own appeal. The light is softer, the island feels even quieter than usual, and the sea is often especially calm in the morning. Some local resort coverage highlights both sunrise and sunset as part of what makes Gili Meno special, and that feels accurate.

This is the best time for a peaceful beach walk, a calm swim, or an uncrowded snorkel if you are heading out from shore. If you want Gili Meno at its most serene, morning is when you find it.

Do less than you think you need to

This might sound like a strange item in a list of things to do, but on Gili Meno it genuinely matters. Too many guides try to force islands like this into an attraction-heavy format. The truth is that one of the best experiences on Gili Meno is simply slipping into its pace. Swim. Read. Cycle. Eat slowly. Snorkel twice in one day. Watch the light change. Go out again after dinner and listen to the sea.

That is not lazy travel. On a place like Gili Meno, that is the right way to experience it.

Gili Meno is at its best when you stop trying to conquer it and just let it happen.

What is actually worth prioritising on Gili Meno?

If you only have one full day on Gili Meno, I would build it around this: morning shore snorkel or a boat snorkelling trip, beach time on the southeast side, lunch by the sea, a late-afternoon visit to the Nest statues if you did not already see them, then sunset on the west coast. If you have two or three nights, add diving, the turtle sanctuary, a slow island cycle, and possibly a half-day hop to Gili Air or Gili Trawangan.

That is when Gili Meno starts to make the most sense. It is not really a place that overwhelms you in a single action-packed day. It is a place that gets better the more you settle into it.

Is Gili Meno worth visiting?

Yes, absolutely, but only if you want what it is actually good at. Gili Meno is worth visiting if you want clear water, excellent snorkelling, a strong chance of seeing turtles, beautiful beaches, diving, and a much quieter atmosphere than the other Gilis. It is also ideal for couples, slower travellers, and anyone who feels immediately tired by the idea of staying on the busiest island in the group.

It is probably not the best choice if you want lots of cafés, shopping, nightlife, or a huge list of inland attractions. But if your version of a great island trip is turtles, turquoise water, barefoot dinners, and quiet evenings, Gili Meno is very easy to fall for. And that is really the point.

Current activity prices for Gili Meno

Bike rental

A current Gili Islands bike rental listing shows standard bikes from IDR 50,000 per day, which converts to about £2.15 / $2.92. That is from Gili T rather than a confirmed Gili Meno shop, but it lines up with the price range travellers usually quote across the Gilis, so it is a fair guide price rather than a guaranteed island-wide rate.

Shared snorkelling trip

A recent operator listing for Gili snorkelling shows shared half-day trips from around IDR 180,000, which is about £7.74 / $10.50. Some other blog-style sources mention around IDR 200,000 from accommodation desks, which would be about £8.60 / $11.67, so I would frame shared tours as roughly IDR 180,000–200,000 per person.

Private snorkelling boat

A current private snorkelling price list around the Gilis shows a 4-hour private trip from IDR 1,400,000 for 1–4 people, with extra passengers charged separately. That works out at about £60.20 / $81.68 total for the boat.

Single fun dive

Blue Marlin’s current Gili Meno pricing lists a single fun dive at IDR 590,000, which is about £25.37 / $34.42.

Discover scuba / try dive

Blue Marlin lists Discover Diving in Gili Meno at IDR 1,050,000, which is about £45.15 / $61.26.

Refresher + 1 dive

Blue Marlin lists a refresher plus one dive at IDR 950,000, which is about £40.85 / $55.42.

Night dive

Blue Marlin lists a night dive at IDR 730,000, which is about £31.39 / $42.59.

Freediving level 1

Blue Marlin lists PADI Freediving Level 1 at IDR 3,950,000, which is about £169.84 / $230.44.

Turtle sanctuary

The sanctuary’s own FAQ says entry is free but donations are appreciated. So there is no fixed ticket price. If you want to suggest a donation in your blog, IDR 50,000–100,000 would feel reasonable as a personal suggestion, which is about £2.15–£4.30 / $2.92–$5.83, but that donation range would be your editorial suggestion rather than an official fee.

Island hopping: Gili Meno to Gili Air

Live booking results show ferry tickets from about $4 to $20 for this route, depending on service type. Using the live USD/IDR rate, the low end is roughly IDR 68,500, and the high end roughly IDR 342,800. Some older traveller write-ups quote local public boat prices lower than that, but the live bookable prices are higher and safer to publish unless you are specifically talking about non-booked local public boats.

Prices can change quickly in the Gili Islands, especially for snorkelling, diving, and boat transport, so it is still worth checking locally before you book.
