Tropea is one of the most beautiful towns on Calabria's Tyrrhenian coast, sitting above clear blue sea and long sandy beaches. Getting there involves a little more planning than visiting Rome or Florence, but it is surprisingly straightforward without a car.

I visited for four days after flying from Manchester into Reggio Calabria. The train journey north was a highlight in itself, and Tropea turned out to be exactly the sort of slower-paced place I had been looking for.

This is my updated guide to getting to Tropea in 2026, covering Lamezia Terme Airport, Reggio Calabria, regional trains, booking tickets, station facilities, luggage, accessibility and the final walk into town. I've included practical travel advice and my experience of making the journey.

What Is the Best Way to Get to Tropea?

For most visitors flying into Calabria, Lamezia Terme is the easiest arrival airport. Take the airport bus to Lamezia Terme Centrale railway station, then board an appropriate regional train to Tropea. If you are already exploring Calabria, the train is also convenient from Reggio Calabria.

I would choose rail over renting a car for a short stay focused on Tropea's old town and beaches. If you plan to explore smaller villages, more remote coves or multiple towns in the region, a hire car may become more useful.

How to Get to Tropea from Lamezia Terme Airport

Lamezia Terme International Airport is usually the most convenient airport for Tropea. It is connected to the main railway station by an Airlink bus, and trains then continue towards the coast.

Step 1: Take the Lamezia Airlink Bus

After collecting your luggage, follow signs for buses outside arrivals. Trenitalia states that the Airlink bus stop is on Viale Rodolfo Imbrogno, about 50 metres from the arrivals exit. The bus runs to Lamezia Terme Centrale railway station.

Trenitalia's English page currently lists the bus supplement as €1.50 (about £1.27 / $1.67), while its Italian page lists €1.80 (about £1.52 / $2.01). Because those official pages disagree, check the live price when booking rather than relying on one figure. The charge is in addition to your train fare.

You can search for a combined bus-and-train ticket using Lamezia Terme Aeroporto as the starting point and Tropea as the destination. Buying the two legs together is easier than finding separate tickets.

Check the official Lamezia Airlink information →

Step 2: Catch a Regional Train to Tropea

From Lamezia Terme Centrale, direct regional trains can reach Tropea in roughly 50–65 minutes. Trains on the coastal route pass places such as Pizzo, Vibo Marina, Briatico, Zambrone and Parghelia.

Importantly, not every train heading south passes through Tropea. Some trains take the inland route towards Rosarno. Check that Tropea appears as a stop on the departure you select, and follow any required change shown by Trenitalia.

What Does the Lamezia–Tropea Train Cost?

Regional fares depend on the exact service and date. My earlier guide used €4–€8 (around £3.38–£6.76 / $4.46–$8.92) as a rough budgeting range for the train itself, but I have not confirmed that as a live bookable 2026 fare. Use Trenitalia for the actual price and remember the separate airport bus charge.

Facilities at Lamezia Terme Centrale

This is a more substantial interchange than Tropea, with ticketing facilities, waiting areas, public toilets, bus connections and accessibility assistance. It's a sensible place to use the toilet or pick up water before continuing. If you're transferring from a flight, allow time for baggage collection and potential delays rather than relying on a very tight connection.

How to Get to Tropea from Reggio Calabria

This was my route to Tropea. I flew from Manchester into Reggio Calabria, then continued by train along the Tyrrhenian coast. Although the city of Reggio Calabria itself didn't particularly impress me, the rail journey north was wonderful and completely changed my mood about the trip.

Reggio Calabria Airport to the Station

Trenitalia promotes a combined airport bus and rail connection via Reggio Calabria Centrale. Local bus routes 27 and 28 connect the station and airport. When checking the combined journey, search for Reggio Calabria Aeroporto Bus.

There is the same official pricing inconsistency for the bus supplement: the English and Italian Trenitalia pages show €1.50 and €1.80 respectively (approximately £1.27–£1.52 / $1.67–$2.01). Confirm the live price before paying.

A separate Reggio di Calabria Aeroporto rail stop also exists, with a shuttle connection, but using Reggio Calabria Centrale is often simpler for a first-time visitor. I used the local number 28 bus on my return journey to the airport.

Train from Reggio Calabria Centrale to Tropea

Suitable direct regional services take approximately 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours 10 minutes. The coast route can pass Villa San Giovanni, Scilla, Bagnara, Palmi, Gioia Tauro, Rosarno and Ricadi before reaching Tropea. Some services and stopping patterns differ, so look at the actual itinerary.

My tip: when heading north from Reggio Calabria, try the left-hand side of the train for the sea views. There were lovely stretches of coastline and turquoise water, and I spent a good part of the journey looking out of the window.

The number and timing of trains can vary by season. In particular, don't assume a special summer evening service will still run in October or winter.

Facilities at Reggio Calabria Centrale

As a main regional station, Reggio Calabria Centrale is a better place to organise your journey than a tiny coastal stop. There are ticketing facilities, waiting areas and connections to city transport. Before travelling, confirm toilet opening hours and availability if they are important to you.

Buying Trenitalia Tickets to Tropea

I generally buy Italian train tickets using the official Trenitalia app or website. It's easy to see departures, whether a change is required and which station the train serves. Paper tickets can also be purchased at station counters or machines where available.

Do You Need to Validate Regional Train Tickets in 2026?

Digital Regional Tickets are now validated automatically at the scheduled departure of your chosen train. You no longer need to check in manually. Keep the ticket on your phone and show it to the conductor if requested, together with identification if asked.

Ordinary paper regional tickets still generally need to be validated in a station machine before boarding. Don't confuse the two types.

Digital Regional Tickets can normally have their date or departure time changed until 11:59 pm the day before travel, and the departure time changed up to the scheduled departure on the day itself, subject to the ticket's terms. This flexibility is useful when connecting from a flight.

Tropea Train Station: What to Expect

Tropea's railway station is small and a short distance outside the historic centre. That's one reason arriving by train is manageable even if you're visiting for the first time.

Walking from Tropea Station to the Old Town

Allow about 10–15 minutes to reach the centre, depending on your hotel. The distance isn't enormous, but Tropea has changes in elevation and some uneven streets. With a small suitcase, I think walking is reasonable; with heavy luggage in August heat, you might prefer to arrange transport with your accommodation.

Tropea itself sits above the sea. The famous beaches are below the cliff-top old town, which means steps and hills are part of the experience. The walk down is easier than the climb back up.

Toilets, Luggage and Accessibility

RFI lists toilets and waiting facilities at Tropea station, but that doesn't guarantee they'll be open at every hour. I would use the facilities before boarding if possible.

I have not found confirmed, official left-luggage lockers at Tropea station. If you have an early arrival or a late departure, ask your accommodation whether it can store your suitcase; don't assume lockers are available.

RFI's assistance service for travellers with disabilities or reduced mobility was introduced at Tropea in July 2026. Some access routes remain limited, so travellers needing assistance should check the station's current facilities and arrange help in advance through RFI's Sala Blu service.

Can You Reach Tropea by Bus or Private Transfer?

Local buses and seasonal services operate around Calabria, but for arrivals from Lamezia Terme or Reggio Calabria I would generally choose the train. It's easier to plan, and the coast route can be part of the holiday.

A private transfer makes sense if you're landing very late, have lots of luggage or don't want to risk a missed railway connection. Check the direction of travel carefully: the airport transfer featured near the beginning of this guide is advertised from Tropea to Reggio Calabria Airport, not necessarily the reverse journey.

Driving to Tropea: Is a Hire Car Worthwhile?

From Lamezia Terme Airport, the drive is typically around one hour in normal conditions. From Reggio Calabria, allow around 1 hour 45 minutes to two hours. Neither is a guaranteed travel time; traffic and your final accommodation location matter.

A car becomes useful if you want to visit more of Calabria, including Capo Vaticano, smaller villages and remote coves. But if you are staying in Tropea for four days, I'd save the cost and stress of hiring one. The historic centre has narrow streets, parking can be awkward in the summer, and some streets have restricted vehicle access.

Is Tropea Worth Visiting Without a Car?

Absolutely. The old town is compact, and some of its biggest attractions are the views, restaurants, beach and atmosphere rather than distant sights. You can easily spend time wandering its streets, taking photographs and enjoying the sea.

For sightseeing farther along the coastline, you could consider a boat excursion to Capo Vaticano and the Coast of the Gods. It's a separate activity, not a replacement for the train journey to Tropea, and tour prices vary by date.

Can You Visit Tropea as a Day Trip?

Yes, especially from Lamezia Terme and nearby coastal towns, but I'd recommend staying for at least a couple of nights. From Reggio Calabria, you also have several hours of round-trip train travel to consider.

The old town can be explored in a day, but Tropea is more enjoyable when you aren't rushing. I stayed for four days, which gave me time to enjoy the coast, food and quieter evenings.

My Experience: The Train Journey and Four Days in Tropea

I visited after finding a particularly good flight deal from Manchester. When flights are that cheap, I tend to find reasons to book them rather than reasons not to. It's a habit that has led me on quite a few unexpected trips.

I'd hoped to meet an Italian friend, but we missed each other by a few days. Perhaps he still hadn't forgiven me for dragging him up Snowdonia in the rain the previous year.

Reggio Calabria didn't make the best first impression. I've travelled quite a lot around Italy, including southern Italy, and it simply wasn't a place I connected with. But once the train headed north and the coastline started opening up, I was very glad I'd made the journey.

By the time I arrived in Tropea I knew I'd chosen the right place. Narrow lanes, old buildings, sea views and an excellent hotel view made it easy to relax into the next few days. There was no need for an elaborate sightseeing itinerary.

The food was another highlight. I especially enjoyed 'nduja, the spicy Calabrian sausage. Seafood pasta is understandably popular here too, though I still haven't developed much enthusiasm for seafood — sorry, Italy.

Tropea probably wouldn't be my first suggestion for somebody visiting Italy for the very first time; the likes of Rome and Florence offer far more headline attractions. But for a relaxed trip after you've seen some of those bigger cities, I think Tropea is brilliant.

Where Should You Stay in Tropea?

Without a car, I'd look for accommodation within walking distance of the historic centre, not just somewhere described as being "near Tropea". If you're arriving by train, check the walking route and slopes as well as the distance.

  • Historic centre: my first choice for a short stay, restaurants and viewpoints.
  • Near Tropea station: practical with luggage or for early departures.
  • Near the beaches: great if sea and sand matter most, but check access to the cliff-top centre.

If your budget allows it, consider paying a little extra for a sea view. The coastline was one of the things I enjoyed most about Tropea.

Is Tropea an Affordable Italian Destination?

Calabria can feel like much better value than some of Italy's most famous coastal destinations, especially outside the busiest summer weeks. Regional trains are comparatively inexpensive, and much of Tropea's appeal comes from walking the old town and enjoying the beaches.

For more on the costs and why I enjoyed southern Italy, read my other article: The Best Budget Destination in Italy.

Final Thoughts: The Best Way to Reach Tropea

For most travellers I would choose Lamezia Terme Airport, then the Airlink bus and a regional train. If you find a better flight into Reggio Calabria, I wouldn't rule it out at all: the coast railway was one of the nicest parts of my own visit.

Tropea is not complicated once you understand the connections. Arrive by train, walk into the historic centre if your luggage allows, and give yourself enough time to enjoy the town rather than just ticking it off.

Sometimes the best thing to do on holiday is very little at all.
